[Political Post] My Political Compass Test

Warning: This post contains Political Content, including statements you may disagree with. Understand that I have a generally left-wing bias in the United States of America, and that may show.

Hello, all!

In terms of politics, I generally identify as a Social Democrat, Progressive, or, in context of this test, Libertarian-Left. This is because I believe in policies such as Medicare for All, Tuition-Free Public College, Living Wage, Green New Deal, Net Neutrality, among others.

But let’s see just where exactly the Political Compass Test sits me.

If you don’t know what the Political Compass is, it’s a test that’ll give you some propositions, and asks you where you stand: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree.

Question 1: If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations.

My Views: Humanity will always be more important than a corporation. If economic globalisation is inevitable, we should absolutely steer it in the direction of serving regular people than big corporations.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: I’d always support my country, whether it was right or wrong.

My Views: Remember Iraq and Afghanistan? We should not be in those countries today. Venezuela? Absolutely not! Iran? Everything they do against us is our fault! Of course this is false. If we are wrong, I’m going to state that we are wrong.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: No one chooses his or her country of birth, so it’s foolish to be proud of it.

My Views: As John Enter pointed out, you don’t choose your family, so is it foolish to be proud of them? You don’t choose your children, unless you adopt, is it foolish to be proud of them? Of course I’m proud of being an American, and I’m proud of our Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Religion! There’s also the existence of Gay Pride, people who are proud of their sexuality, are they being foolish?

Answer: Disagree

Question: Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races.

My Views: This is called Racism. No matter what Race you are, you are simply a Human Being.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

My Views: This is the same ideal that led to us allying with the organization that would later become Al Qaeda, the organization that performed that terrorist attack in 2001.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Military action that defies international law is sometimes justified.

My Views: For the most part, we should be following International Law. Without Law and Order, horrible things happen, such as what we’re doing overseas. The only time this will ever be necessary is if compliance will literally cause the end of this country.

Answer: Disagree

Question: There is now a worrying fusion of information and entertainment.

My Views: While entertainment can most definitely be used to portray information, this worrying fusion is very much so present. People have been using details from entertainment to learn information about the real world, and that’s just not how that works.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: People are ultimately divided more by class than by nationality.

My Views: The vast majority of the issues we see are issues of Rich vs. Poor. Of those that blame others of race or nationality simply buy into a false premise that the rich tells them.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: Controlling inflation is more important than controlling unemployment.

My Views: I think it’s pretty obvious that both are very important to control. Given this reality, there is the underlying fact that it doesn’t matter if everyone’s employed if most of them can’t afford their necessities thanks to inflation.

Answer: Agree

Question: Because corporations cannot be trusted to voluntarily protect the environment, they require regulation.

My Views: It has been proven over many decades by corporate actions that money has always been considered more important than the environment. With only 12 years to prevent environmental disaster, it is absolutely important to regulate these corporations!

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” is a fundamentally good idea.

My Views: While this ideal is rooted in good intentions, it can very much so lead to issues when it goes too far, such as the aim to Communism. If we’re talking about labor, then this is very much so not a good idea. If we’re talking about redistribution of wealth from the megarich to those that really need it in the form of welfare programs, it can boost our economy by allowing more people to participate in it. Fundamentally, it depends.

Answer: Disagree

Question: It’s a sad reflection on our society that something as basic as drinking water is now a bottled, branded consumer product.

My Views: There are other ways to get water. Bottled water is simply an option.

Answer: Disagree

Question: Land shouldn’t be a commodity to be bought and sold.

My Views: The land is ultimately owned by the government whose country it exists in. It’s not sold as a commodity since, as one would expect, we’d run out very quickly. In the United States, they can even force you to give up your land given that they compensate you monetarily what they think it’s worth.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: It is regrettable that many personal fortunes are made by people who simply manipulate money and contribute nothing to their society.

My Views: The three wealthiest people, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffet, have more money than the bottom half of the American People. Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world, and his company, which was the second $1 Trillion company in the world, paid literally $0.00 in taxes twice in a row. While I won’t say they necessarily contribute nothing (Bill Gates founded Microsoft which gave us BASIC, MS-DOS, and Windows, basically part of the computer industry from the beginning, and Jeff founded Amazon), they definitely didn’t get all their wealth in a totally fair system. This is even more obvious when you look at the Walton Family, who didn’t even earn any of their money. The founders are both dead.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: Protectionism is sometimes necessary in trade.

My Views: Just look at the effects of the trade deals we have now. With NAFTA, the TPP, and permanent trade relations with China, we’ve ended up with job after job being outsourced to other countries and lost far too many well-paying jobs as a result. Yes, Donald Trump botched it, but if done right (I repeat, if done right), this ideal could lead to massive economic growth. Yes, we should have trade relations with other countries, but not at the cost of domestic jobs.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: The only social responsibility of a company should be to deliver a profit to its shareholders.

My Views: This really is the purpose of a company: to make money. It doesn’t really get any deeper than that. To curb issues with this ideal, we need laws that ensure that workers get proper rights and have ways to seek help when those rights are violated. Problem with this question is I don’t necessarily Agree or Disagree with it. However, I’m leaning towards…

Answer: Agree

Question: The rich are too highly taxed.

My Views: Amazon paid $0.00 in federal taxes last year.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Those with the ability to pay should have access to higher standards of medical care.

My Views: Need is need. If you get shot, or you get sick, or you are to prevent sickness, you should get help. Sick. Help. Sick. Help.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Governments should penalise businesses that mislead the public.

My Views: I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, Free Speech is ultimately the most important value in our country. On the other hand, misleading the public can be very dangerous if left totally uncontrolled. With all that said, I think I’m gonna lean more towards Freedom of Speech.

Answer: Disagree

Question: A genuine free market requires restrictions on the ability of predator multinationals to create monopolies.

My Views: If you struggle with this one, just look at John Enter’s series “Technocracy” to see just how horribly monopolies can affect our lives.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: The freer the market, the freer the people.

My Views: In general, yes. There are very few things that shouldn’t be in the Private Market, and again, with Technocracy, you should see what monopolies can do. But without a risk of a monopoly, with healthy competition, with proper safety regulations, and genuine consumer choice, yes, this is absolutely true.

Answer: Agree

Question: Abortion, when the woman’s life is not threatened, should always be illegal.

My Views: Women should have the right to choose all the way up to viability, then abortions should be limited to rape, incest, or danger to the Woman’s life. This is generally how most people think about this, and no, this view does not mean supporting infanticide. How anyone believes that is beyond me.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: All authority should be questioned.

My Views: Without questioning authority, you end up with authoritarianism. Questioning authority doesn’t mean taking everything they say and doing the exact opposite. Civil disobedience and other forms of protests are just about how, for example, Women and Black People got the right to vote.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

My Views: An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.

Answer: Disagree

Question: Taxpayers should not be expected to prop up any theatres or museums that cannot survive on a commercial basis.

My Views: Taxpayers should not be paying to keep any Private Company up and running.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: Schools should not make classroom attendance compulsory.

My Views: Education is one of the most important things in life. An educated population is one that can make the correct choices.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: All people have their rights, but it is better for all of us that different sorts of people should keep to their own kind.

My Views: This is called bigotry and segregation. Multiculturalism is what makes America an interesting place to live in.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Good parents sometimes have to spank their children.

My Views: Physically hurting someone is never a good thing to do. If you have to resort to spanking, you did something wrong.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: It’s natural for children to keep some secrets from their parents.

My Views: Not only is it natural, it’s simply natural for any person to have secrets in the first place. Nobody should expect anyone to tell them literally every last thing about themselves.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: Possessing marijuana for personal use should not be a criminal offence.

My Views: Marijuana is not a dangerous substance in the first place. There should never exist a crime where there are no victims. This, on top of the fact that bans simply don’t work when there is a market for something.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: The prime function of schooling should be to equip the future generation to find jobs.

My Views: The prime function of schooling should be to equip the future generation to be able to function on their own, period, and that includes finding jobs.

Answer: Agree

Question: People with serious inheritable disabilities should not be allowed to reproduce.

My Views: People who want to reproduce should be allowed to. There should never be a law that makes reproduction illegal for anyone.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: The most important thing for children to learn is to accept discipline.

My Views: The most important thing for children to learn is Critical Thinking.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: There are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different cultures.

My Views: Being uncivilized doesn’t necessarily imply being savage. Being savage implies being violent. Civilized people can too be savage themselves. The options being given is a false dichotomy, they’re not mutually exclusive, but I guess that’s the point, ain’t it?

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Those who are able to work, and refuse the opportunity, should not expect society’s support.

My Views: Yes, if you have the opportunity to be successful, and you refuse said opportunity, that’s on you. Policies like Medicare for All, Free College, Living Wage, and others are meant to give everyone an equal opportunity. Even Universal Basic Income holds this purpose. If you refuse the opportunities that are given to you, then you should not expect any further support.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: When you are troubled, it’s better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things.

My Views: While it can be better for your mental health to focus on cheerful things, if you’re troubled by something you need to address, then you still need to address it. You can’t just sit there and ignore it.

Answer: Disagree

Question: First-generation immigrants can never be fully integrated within their new country.

My Views: Again, this idea is spawned from racism. Of course a person who moves into a new country can be fully integrated.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: What’s good for the most successful corporations is always, ultimately, good for all of us.

My Views: Does anyone really believe that Facebook collecting all our data and constantly leaking it is ultimately good for all of us, or businesses paying their workers less than they need to sustain themselves is good for all of us, or businesses pumping CO2 into the air and making the planet unsustainable is good for all of us?

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: No broadcasting institution, however independent its content, should receive public funding.

My Views: Let me put it to you this way: I personally feel that CSPAN and CSPAN2 should really be publicly-owned and publicly-funded, and PBS, especially PBS Kids, is a great resource.

Answer: Disagree

Question: Our civil liberties are being excessively curbed in the name of counter-terrorism.

My Views: Just look at the NSA, TSA, and Facial Recognition.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: A significant advantage of a one-party state is that it avoids all the arguments that delay progress in a democratic political system.

My Views: That is, indeed, a significant advantage. However, it has the disadvantage of the fact that everyone in that party agrees with each-other on everything. That’s easily dangerous.

Answer: Agree

Question: Although the electronic age makes official surveillance easier, only wrongdoers need to be worried.

My Views: Surveillance has been used to curb protests and arrest innocent people all around the world, including the United States of America. People should always want to defend their privacy!

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: The death penalty should be an option for the most serious crimes.

My Views: The death penalty should never be an option for anything, especially when there’s even a .01% chance of an innocent people being placed on death row.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: In a civilised society, one must always have people above to be obeyed and people below to be commanded.

My Views: Sort of. In the United States, with a properly functioning Democracy, everyone has a higher up. Even the President has a higher up: The People.

Answer: Agree

Question: Abstract art that doesn’t represent anything shouldn’t be considered art at all.

My Views: Art is always a matter of opinion.

Answer: Disagree

Question: In criminal justice, punishment should be more important than rehabilitation.

My Views: Rehabilitation is the most important thing in criminal justice. When you release someone, you want them to be released in a better mental state than when they entered. When you focus primarily on punishment, you end up with released convicts that end up going right back into prison. Norway is a perfect example, with an incarceration rate of 75 per 100,000 and a recidivism rate of 20%. Compare that to the United States with an incarceration rate of 707 per 100,000 and a recidivism rate of 76.6%. Let me put it to you this way: When you treat prisoners like animals, they become animals. When you treat them like Human Beings, they become Human Beings.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: It is a waste of time to try to rehabilitate some criminals.

My Views: NORWAY!!!

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: The businessperson and the manufacturer are more important than the writer and the artist.

My Views: Both are extremely important, but it’s the writer and the artist that actually create the content.

Answer: Disagree

Question: Mothers may have careers, but their first duty is to be homemakers.

My Views: What duty the Mother and the Father has is a decision between them, not a decision for society.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Multinational companies are unethically exploiting the plant genetic resources of developing countries.

My Views: Which is why regulations are so important!!!

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: Making peace with the establishment is an important aspect of maturity.

My Views: Was it immature for black people to protest over being segregated and getting lesser services just because they were black? Just because something is the status quo, doesn’t mean that’s how it should be.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Astrology accurately explains many things.

My Views: Give me the evidence.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: You cannot be moral without being religious.

My Views: Hi, I’m an atheist, and I never get the urge to kill someone. It’s wrong.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Charity is better than social security as a means of helping the genuinely disadvantaged

My Views: A Social Security system can be made available to anyone and is provided by the government. Charities depend on what’s around you.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Some people are naturally unlucky.

My Views: Some people are born poor, born with a severe disability, born into a discriminated population…

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: It is important that my child’s school instills religious values.

My Views: I’ll sue.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Sex outside marriage is usually immoral.

My Views: What happens between two consenting adults behind closed doors is none of my business. If the person is married, they can take that up with their spouse.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: A same sex couple in a stable, loving relationship should not be excluded from the possibility of child adoption.

My Views: The only people that should be excluded from the possibility of child adoption are violent criminals and sex offenders.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: Pornography, depicting consenting adults, should be legal for the adult population.

My Views: As long as every person involved in a sexual interaction is a consenting adult, there should be no legal problems.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: What goes on in a private bedroom between consenting adults is no business of the state.

My Views: That’s exactly my point.

Answer: Strongly Agree

Question: No one can feel naturally homosexual.

My Views: If this was the case, homosexuality wouldn’t exist.

Answer: Strongly Disagree

Question: These days openness about sex has gone too far.

My Views: Have you seen Teenagers on Social Media??!?

Answer: Strongly Agree

Economic: -3.5
Social: -5.28

Well, that was fun! Next Political Post will be me taking the ISideWith Quiz. If there’s anything else you want me to do on this front, or really any kind of quiz or maybe a mini-game at some point, shoot me a tweet at @Pantallahueso!
